    Surveillance Camera - FAQ

    General questions

What are surveillance cameras and how do they work?

Surveillance cameras are cameras that are used to document private security or security in public buildings and companies and, if necessary, to store it for the long term.
The aim is to have evidence documented by video in the event of a security threat or breach of privacy and, if necessary, to record the perpetrators in such a way that the police can identify and arrest them. But just for prevention and deterrence alone, many people get surveillance cameras so that criminals don't even get the idea of breaking into or robbing someone.

What types of surveillance cameras are there?

There are fundamentally different techniques for surveillance cameras.

The first example is Analog HD. Analog HD devices are practical in that they can be easily connected to a recorder with a cable and create a stable point-to-point connection. In this way, a constant and hardly disturbing signal can be transmitted.

TVI or "Transport Video Interface" is also an analog transmission of high-resolution or HD videos. HD-TVI cameras record videos from 2 megapixels to 4K and use coaxial cables for data transmission (source cambuy.de).

HDCVI, which stands for High Definition Composite Video Interface, is a digital image transmission technology that enables the transmission of videos with a resolution of HD. Full HD up to 4K. The advantage here is the high image quality and low latency. The range is usually around 600 meters (source: dahuasecurity.com).

IP (“Internet Protocol”) technology describes data transmission over the network. Nowadays this is the most common type of surveillance camera (source: aptex.ch).

Which and how many cameras do I need?

How many cameras you should install is of course purely subjective. It all depends on what areas of your property you want to cover and where you need a camera to feel safe and comfortable. So it's entirely at your own discretion. With regard to the type of recording, you can choose between the recorder and live video. With a recorder, the cameras are connected to a video recorder that records all the footage. A live video, on the other hand, allows you to call up the current live image at any time via an app.
Some cameras with a live image also record events and save these short clips in the app, such as detected movements either generally or only during the absence period.

What do you have to consider when buying a surveillance camera?

Of course, personal preferences have to be met here. This can apply to the type of camera, the function of recording/recalling the image, and additional features such as infrared night vision or controllable movement.

    Installation and usage

Where and how can I view and/or save the surveillance video?

As mentioned in the previous FAQ question, you can either opt for a video recorder or a live image. The recorder provides a full recording of the captured image until the hard disk is full. With a live image, you can watch video 24/7, but the image is not always recorded, with many systems, you can record short clips via an app. This can be controlled manually or recorded automatically when motion is detected. These clips are then stored in the app.

Do you have to look after the cameras and what is there to consider?

Basically you don't have to worry, only if the glass in front of the lens is fogged up, dirty or blurred by the rain. You should wipe it with a rag and maybe glass cleaner. Otherwise, with battery-powered cameras, you should make sure that the battery is sufficiently charged or charge the battery preventively.

Are surveillance cameras suitable for business or private use?

Of course, it always depends on the camera model, but it is basically worthwhile for both companies and private individuals to strengthen their own security with a surveillance camera and not only to deter criminals preventively but also to be able to identify them in extreme cases. You practically protect yourself twice and entrepreneurs in particular can benefit from this, as they are more likely to be affected by robberies or burglaries than private individuals. So it can definitely pay off for both private and professional use to install a little money in a surveillance system and thus protect much more expensive stolen goods or, even more importantly, your own safety and health.

Can you use moving cameras with a movement angle?

It all depends on the detectable area. If you use a mobile camera that can also film someone else's or public property when rotated, your neighbors or public passers-by have the option of taking legal action against you (source: test.de). If only your property and property can be seen in every rotated or tilted angle, you can also use mobile cameras without any problems.

How should you mount a surveillance camera?

In order to create the greatest possible preventive effect, the cameras should be placed as conspicuously as possible. Criminals think twice before breaking into your home.
It is best to focus on entrances and exits as well as low windows, back doors, and garages. At the main entrance, you should not necessarily point your camera at the door but, if available, rather at the driveway or the front garden (Source: Bascom).

How high is the video quality on security cameras these days?

Depending on the model, the video quality of the cameras from our shop range from HD to WQHD and Full HD up to a resolution of 4K.
More detailed information can be found in the respective product description.

What exactly is recorded and what is not?

This again depends on the camera and software system. A fundamental distinction is made between permanent recordings and live images, which are stored entirely on hard drives, if at all.
This is often the case with companies and companies with permanent video surveillance so that in an emergency complete recordings are available and live cameras that record individual videos through a specific trigger.
This technique is more commonly used in private property surveillance, which often records when motion is detected once the system is armed. In this way, only individual potentially suspicious clips are saved.

Where can you access the videos?

This varies depending on which camera system you are using. There are some brands that offer their own app where you can not only follow the live image but also watch recorded videos. An example of this is eufy.
On the other hand, there are also cameras that can be integrated into existing systems, such as AJAX, where any IP camera that supports the RTSP protocol can be integrated.
Some cameras can also be easily connected to a hard drive, where the video recordings can be stored completely.

    Legal limitations and tips

What are you allowed to film?

In short: You may film everything that belongs to your property and everything that is owned by someone else or on public property may not be shown on your video. For example, if you park your car on a public street, you are not allowed to monitor it. The right to film is strictly limited to private property. It is also better to point out to guests and visitors that the property they are entering is monitored (source: Verbraucherzentrale).

What are the areas of application for surveillance cameras and can problems arise?

Cameras are legally permitted everywhere as long as the building, object, and/or property being filmed is one's own property.
Everything that does not belong to you must not be filmed and, if it is filmed, can have legal consequences (source:
    test.de).

Do I have to delete my recordings someday?

As long as you record your own property, there are no legal restrictions on how long you can store the recordings (Source: Stiftung Warentest).

Do you have to mark video surveillance for visitors?

It is definitely advisable to attach a sign to your property that this area is under video surveillance. This way, you avoid the risk of accusations from others that you record them without their knowledge and avoid any legal dispute as long as you only film your own property.

Can recordings be used as evidence or for public investigations?

In principle, recordings showing burglars can be used by the police as evidence, but this may only be given to the police or official executive powers for investigation purposes and may not be published under any circumstances. If this is done anyway, the perpetrator can plead for damage payments (source: test.de).
