What is a set-top box?

A set-top box is a device that is connected to another - usually a TV - and the user should provide additional uses.

What does "IPTV" mean?

Unlike e.g. cable TV requires "IPTV" no separate cable network. Transmission is via the Internet infrastructure already in place in most households (e.g., fiber optic connections).

What is a streaming client?

A streaming client is a special client for streaming media content. Known streaming clients are e.g. the Amazon Fire TV Stick, set-top boxes from the manufacturer infomir or Apple Tv.

What does "HDMI" stand for?

HDMI stands for High Definition Multimedia Interface. HDMI cables are used in the multimedia sector for the transmission of video and audio signals, e.g. when connecting a receiver to a TV.

What is OpenELEC?

OpenELEC (Open Embedded Linux Entertainment Center) is a free operating system and media center. Usually, OpenELEC is operated by a receiver on a regular TV and controlled by a remote control.

What is Kodi and what can I do with it?

Kodi is a media center that you can use on your receiver to play your music or to watch movies, series and photos.

What is the EPG?

EPG stands for "Electronic Program Guide". You can use the EPG function of a TV or a receiver to display the current and upcoming TV program, similar to a TV guide.

What does "Video on Demand" (VoD) mean?

Several vendors provide video-on-demand (short: VoD) libraries that allow you to watch your favorite series and movies on demand - in most cases on your smartphone or tablet.

What is HEVC / H.265?

HEVC stands for "High Efficiency Video Coding". This is a codec, similar to MP3 for audio files, in which the original material was compressed. The advantage of HEVC compressed content is that it consumes significantly less storage space and is easier to stream over the network.

What is a codec?

The term codec (e.g., MP3, HEVC) refers to an algorithm pair that has the task of digitally encoding and decoding data and signals, for example, to reduce the required storage capacity of audio and video content.

What does S/PDIF stand for?

S/PDIF stands for "Sony / Philips Digital Interface". It is an interface specification for the electrical or optical transmission of digital stereo or multichannel audio signals between different devices (e.g., between the TV and the receiver).

What does "UHD" mean?

"UHD" (Ultra HD) is four times the resolution of Full HD. The pixels in width and height are each doubled. So a resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels is achieved.
